Getting Excited For God

There are lots of things in life that get you excited.  As a child, you got excited about a birthday party.  You could not wait.  Spending time with all your friends and eating ice cream and cake made your day.  Perhaps the most exciting time in your childhood, though, was Christmas.  You got excited beyond words to get all those Christmas presents.

As you got older, the things in which you get excited about changed.  What alumni or college fan does not get excited in watching a football game.  That college or pro football team you support gets your undivided attention for a little over two hours.  You are glued to your seat, but your armchair cheering is second only to you being in the actual stadium.  One unknown writer talks about this in our relationship with God: “If a man stands up and cheers for a football team in a stadium, he is called a ‘fan.’  But if he stands and cheers with conviction for the cause of Jesus Christ, he is labeled a ‘fanatic.’”  This is sad but true!

The Lord wants you and me to be excited about the things of God.  This excitement should be internal, but also external.  The way you feel inside will affect your external actions.  One such person was not afraid to show his zeal for God, “He said, ‘Come with me and see my zeal for the Lord” (2 Kings 10:16).  This person had a zeal for the things of God.  His zeal was not something the he was ashamed of.  He said come and see for yourself the zeal I have for the Lord.

I realize that you can go overboard with having too much excitement about the Lord.  When this happens, you lose your testimony and others refuse to listen to you.  The problem with most of us, though, is that we have too little zeal.  You need to show more zeal for the Lord.  Start today!
