Never Too Old To Learn

That title brings up a good question?  How old is too old to learn?  When you are a child, you cannot wait to be a teenager, whom you think is much wiser than yourself.  When you are teenager, you can’t wait to get out of high school, as you think you will be wiser, still.  After high school, you covet going to college to finally be wise.  After college, you realize that there are on-going seminars and learning you must do to be successful in your career.  All-in-all, you finally see that learning is a life-long process.

But what about after you retire from your work?  In those golden years, do you still need to be learning?  And how old is it that you are too old to learn?  “Your age, please?” asked the census taker.  “Well,” said the woman, “let me figure it out.  I was 18 when I married and my husband was 30.  He is now 60, or twice as old as he was then, so I am now 36.”  Ha!  Ha!  I guess how old you are is just a matter of how you calculate your age.  Ha!  Ha!

When you think of being old and learning, it causes you to think a little about exactly what age learning stops.  When do you get old enough that being engaged in the learning process is a thing of the past?  Henry Ford was a wise entrepreneur who revolutionized the manufacturing process.  With him implementing the assembly line, manufacturing would never be the same again.  He discussed his thoughts on growing old and learning, when he said, “You stop growing when you stop learning.”  Learning, then, is a life-long process.

Jesus talks about Himself and learning, as a life-long process, when He said: “take my yoke upon you and learn from Me” (Matthew 11:29).  Jesus said that you are to continually “learn” from Him.

All this, returns you to the title above – you are never too old to learn.  Dust that Bible off and make a personal study of a topic that interests you.  Start today!

  1. Amen. Never to old to learn. Never too young either. The Bible allows for continuous learning because for me, every time I read a certain portion of scripture, I get a new revelation of its meaning or see things in a different perspective.
