Being Your Best

You want to be the best you can be in life.  That is why you studied to get the job that you have.  You also put your nose to the books and studied to become better at your profession.  You will be left behind, and salary increases will not come in a timely manne, if you do not have continued education in the job you hold.

Education and learning are what sets you apart from the animal kingdom.  Horace Mann stated some insightful words, when he said, “A human being is not, in any proper sense, a human being until he is educated.”  How true this is!  Even basic skills of reading and writing must be taught to you.  These, along with so many other subjects, are required knowledge to exist in today’s society.

To learn anything, you’ll do well if you can learn from someone who knows the subject you are studying.  The same is true about your Christian walk.  Jesus gives a simple command to Christians who want to grow in their Christian faith: “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls” (Matt. 11:29).  Jesus refers to the ups and downs of living holy lives that He gives you, as He refers to “take My yoke upon you.”  The response to life’s challenges in your Christian life you find by living your life in the same manner that Jesus followed; this is what Jesus means by “learn from Me.”  The result of such a life, living this way, is “you will find rest for your soul.”  Jesus never intended your life to be filled with frustrations and disappointments.  In fact, He wants you to live above these situations.  You do that only as you live your life in such a way that you “Learn from Me.”

To be your best, live your life by learning from the best teachers possible.  In your Christian life, that means learning from Christ’s example.  The result is “rest for your soul.”
