When you think of a closet experience, what do you think of? Unfortunately, you may go back to a childhood experience where you were being punished and were sent into your closet? Or fortunately, you may remember as a child, hiding in the closet when you were playing hide and seek with a friend or your parent.
That is not the kind of closet experience about which I am talking. I am talking about getting alone with God, regardless of an actual closet or not. There are times in your life when you need to get all alone with God. Yes, you pray, but more importantly, you sit still and listen to His small voice talk to you. Afterwards, the rubber hits the road when you go and do “exactly” what He tells you to do.
Our Daily Bread describes a story where a closet experience was mandatory, and as usual, God showed up: “When George Fredrick Handel’s health and finances were at a low point, he rose to the greatest heights of his creative experience. His creditors were threatening him with imprisonment, and he was suffering from partial paralysis. He then went into seclusion and fellowshipped with God as never before. During that time, God enabled him to write the grandest of all his oratorios, Messiah.” Handel got all alone with God, and God came to His rescue. God will do the same for you.
One of the grandest descriptions of Jesus Christ in the Old Testament is found in Isaiah 9:6-7, where verse 6 states: “For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; and the government will rest on His shoulders; and His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Almighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.” One of the names given to the Lord Jesus is “Wonderful Counselor.” In other words, when you need divine wisdom, Jesus is the One you need to go to, because He gives counsel as your Eternal, all knowing and all powerful, Counselor.
You may be in such a place in your life, where you need divine counsel. Go into that closet and get on your knees to pour your heart to the “Wonderful Counselor.” He will tell you “exactly” what you need to know and what you need to do. Next, go do it!
