Humility Defined

Pastor’s Pen

We all like our lives when things are going well and we feel as if we are on top of the world. Everything seems to go our way. The old wives tale seems to ring loud and clear—everything we touch turns to gold. Then there are other times in our lives when life knocks us down from the pedestal we are on and we may even be forced to eat crow. Humility is a trait we would prefer to see in others, but not necessarily see in our own lives.

Charles Haddon Spurgeon was, not only a great Baptist preacher of yesteryear, but also one of the greatest preachers the world has ever witnessed. When talking about humility, Spurgeon made the following statement: “Humility is to make a right estimate of oneself. It is no humility for a man to think less of himself than he ought.” Yes, when we are humble we are not a doormat for others to step on us, but are strong in faith. We know that our strength lies in the Lord Yahweh not in ourselves.

This principle is good to keep in mind to keep us in the right state of mind to be humble.
Scripture also teaches this same principle: “For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith” (Rom. 12:3). God gives each one of us the amount of faith we need to keep us humble.

Let’s be people of humility each day this week!!!
