Growing In Knowledge

You know that your life is busy.  It is hectic going from place to place and getting done what you feel must be done.  To top that off, here is the Christmas Season.  Gifts must be bought and wrapped, parties must be attended, and of course there are those special Christmas programs at church to either attend or participate in them.

After the Christmas holidays, life gets back into some routine of predictability.  One discipline that seems lacking is your dedication to read/study the Holy Scriptures.  There are so many other activities you put ahead of daily time in the Bible.  Reading daily devotions is brief and often rushed, and serious study time, well, it just doesn’t happen.  An unknown author gives some much-needed advice in dealing with reading your Bible: “Know it in your mind.  Stow it in your heart.  Show it in your life.  Sow it in the world.”  Now, that is some sound advice that you need to implement in your life.

When the Scriptures talk about the necessity of reading and studying the Word of God, it speaks to why that is important.  The reason behind those disciplines, when seriously thought over, yields good motivation to increase in your knowledge of the Holy Bible.  This is explained in Hebrews 4:12, “For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”  Notice that Scripture is “living and active.”  Thus, it will impact another living being—namely your heart and mind.  This is a fact because the verse says it will “judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”  The heart is wicked and the only way to really know what is deep inside you is to compare your thoughts and motives with Scripture.

You are either growing or backsliding.  You cannot be stagnant.  Let 2019 be a year to grow in your knowledge; read and/or study your Bible daily.
