We live in a society that puts monetary wealth at the top of the food chain. It starts as early as kindergarten and does not diminish any afterwards. We learn early that to get the things in life that we want, money is important. It is a fact that money is important, but we are taught that unless you have money, and lots of it, our earthly life is not worth much.
John Henry Jowett was a biblical scholar of days gone by. He says this in regards to wealth: “The real measure of our wealth is how much we’d be worth if we lost all our money.” We see that wealth is not necessarily the amount of money that we have. Wealth in so many other areas of our lives is more important than the money we have.
A very rich man came to Jesus and asked how he might have eternal life. He understood the importance of being prepared on earth to enter heaven. From the passage we see that he was, also, very religious. He kept all the commandments from his youth up. Jesus tells him one thing that he lacks; he must sell all he has and follow Jesus. He goes away sad, because he treasured his earthly riches more than having eternal riches. Jesus tells His disciples that it is extremely hard for the rich to enter heaven. The disciples are confused and ask who then can get into heaven. Jesus’ answer to the disciples is in Matthew 19:26, “And looking at them Jesus said to them, ‘With people this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.’” Here Jesus states that people have limitations, but God has no limitations. Anything is possible to those who put their trust in God.
Money is important in life and wealth in so many other areas of life assists us in living the best we can on earth. But the most important attribute we can have on earth is to have faith in God. He alone can do the impossible!
