You graduate from school and soon get a job. While working at your vocation, you ponder the meaning of life. Depending upon your maturity in Christ, this will determine your perspective. The closer you get to the Lord Jesus, the more that life on earth makes sense. This relieves a lot of anxiety that many do not have.
When you actually come to terms with the meaning of life for yourself, life takes on a new meaning. So, to gain the most fulfillment on earth, you are wise to pursue what you feel is God’s purpose for your life. William James, in addressing this issue, states a profound truth: “The great use of life is to spend it for something that will outlast it.” Now, that gives life on earth a purpose.
Jesus talks about the real meaning of life on earth in Matthew 16; here He commands His followers, “For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it” (v.25). Jesus is telling you that if you want a life with meaning and purpose, then the only way to get that kind of life is being totally committed to Jesus. You have to let Christ lead, guide, and direct your life. This includes being obedient and following the Lord, regardless of what you may prefer.
To have a fulfilled life means doing something that will be around after you are gone. Take a few minutes right now and stop what you are doing. Say a short prayer and ask Jesus to tell you what He wants you to do your remainder days on earth. If you feel that you are doing what God wants you to do on earth, then ask Him to affirm in your heart that you are fulfilling His life purpose for you.
Knowing the life purpose for your life gives this earthly existence meaning. You feel fulfilled, because, after all, you were created to glorify God.
