When you read your Bible, you feel like you know God more today than you did yesterday. In fact, the truth be told, on a weekly basis you learn something you did know previously about the Lord. There is no end to your learning about God.
You may feel that God should behave this way or that. You do not understand why He allows some things and withholds other things; why He did not answer a certain prayer. You may even feel that He is not fair, or that He has treated you cruelly.
Charles Spurgeon was greatly used by God, as an evangelist, in the 1800s. A theological student came to Charles Spurgeon one day, greatly concerned that he could not grasp the meaning of certain verses in the Bible. The noted preacher replied kindly, but firmly, “Young man, allow me to give you this word of advice. Give the Lord credit for knowing things you don’t understand.” Since God is God, He must know more than you know. You cannot believe that the Lord is omniscient, all knowing, and also think you can understand all He does in your life. His ways are beyond your comprehension.
The Scriptures, over and over again, either explicitly or implicitly imply, that the Lord God causes or allows events on earth. These are far, far beyond human comprehension. One of many such verses is in Romans 11:33, “Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways!” This verse makes it clear, as a cloudless day, that what happens on earth in way beyond your ability to make sense to you. It you could understand all that God is and does, this would nullify Him being omniscient.
Therefore, give God credit for knowing and orchestrating life on earth which is way, way beyond your understanding. After all, isn’t that what living my faith is all about?
