You strive to be on top of your profession, your relationship with Christ, etc. The truth be known, you excel to be the number one person in just about everything you do. With that attitude comes a certain amount pride. All anyone has to do is to ask you, and you will tell them just how good you are. You have strived hard to get where you are, so you feel like you deserve what you have and are quick to tell others of your achievements.
The culture in which you live tells you that whatever you are, you should not be humble. When little Wilhemina was crowned queen of Holland, the happy little girl, too young to realize the gravity of the occasion, with thousands of people cheering her on, was unable to take it all in. Turning to her mother she said, “Mama, do all these people belong to me?” Her mother replied, “No, dear, you belong to all these people!” That attitude of humility is rejected by those around you.
That causes you to think about what the Holy Bible says about being humble. That attribute of humility is commanded throughout the Old Testament and the New Testament. The opposite of humility is to be full of pride which the Bible warns in Proverbs 16:18 that “Pride goes before destruction.” Thus, to practice humility is a wise decision. Philippians 2:3 yields some sound counsel about humility: “Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves.” To exhibit the attribute of humility starts with a servant attitude. You should put others above your personal interests.
Dust that holy attribute of humility off and make a concerted effort to live it. That will take some divine intervention, but the Lord is only a prayer away to make it happen. Remember, the way up is down.
