To Have A Friend, Be A Friend

You like to have at least a few good friends.  Friends are people that share something in common with you and you enjoy their company.  Friendships start when you are just a little fellow but they play an important part in your life while your  earthly pilgrimage continues.

You may wonder just how do I find a few good friends or have a number of people who are friends?  Dale Carnegie wrote an entire book on how to make friends.  When discussing the topic, he said, “You can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get people interested in you.”  That goes right along with that old wives’ tale which says, “To have a friend, be a friend.

The Holy Bible says a ton of information about doing for others without trying to get anything in return.  The Scriptures also challenge the believer to be a servant who serves rather than someone who is served.  One key to having good friends is to take a genuine interest in other people and to be there for them in their hour of need.  Proverbs 17:17 gives some sound wisdom when it comes to making friends, “A friend loves at all times.”  If you want someone to be your friend, then you must love that person, not only when it is convenient, but also when it is inconvenient.

Good friendships take time.  The road you travel in your life’s journey is much more enjoyable when shared with a friend.  So take Dale Carnegie’s advice and become interested in others today.  When you have a good friend, they will be there for you when you need them.  How will you know if they are your friend or not?  When everyone else in your life leaves, your friend(s) will stick by your side.  Why do they do this?  Because “a friend loves at all times.”
