There is a universal language that everyone knows, and that is the language of love. One of the best ways to express that language is through music and song. The mere number of songs, concerts, music videos, and sales due to love songs is nothing more than mind boggling. Everyone seems to love music and some of the best music around deals with love. It does not matter if it is country music, hip-hop music, or Christian songs; when the theme is love, your ears perk up and your heart skips a beat or two.
Of all the different kinds of love songs, probably the best are those that deal with your relationship between you and your Savior. Sebastian Bach was a composer who left a huge repertoire of great music behind for us to enjoy. “The sole purpose of all music is to bring glory to God.” Sebastian Bach said. At the top of all his music he wrote the initials “J.J.,” which are the Latin abbreviations for “Jesus, help me,” and at the bottom of all his music he wrote the initials “SDG” which stands for “Sola Dei Gloria” (“Only to God Be the Glory”).
Songs relate to the Spirit-filled Christian as well. When Paul was telling the Christians in Ephesus about how to be filled with the Spirit, he says “speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord” (Eph. 5:19). It may surprise you, but one way to tell if you are Spirit-filled is by how often you sing spiritual songs to the Lord. This includes gospel songs, contemporary Christian songs, and hymns. Just let it rip and sing to your heart’s content. You will notice a sense of freedom in your soul and closeness to the Lord. If you hear a dog barking loudly when you sing, you may want to tone it down a tad. Ha! Ha!
Go out there and sing your heart’s content to the Lord Jesus for all He has done in your life, what He is doing, and what He will do. In other words, go spread a little love around in the name of Jesus!
