The Real You

Have you ever stopped and taken an in depth look at how you really are? How do you treat other people? How do you respond to difficulties? These questions get you looking at who you really are deep inside yourself. These probing questions get you to see the real you. I am not talking about what you do when you are in public, but how you react and respond in private.

In other words, this paints a picture of what your character is really like. Character dictates how you handle a difficult situation, how you act in private, and how you treat other people in general. Your character shines outside what your deep convictions are inside. D. L. Moody, the famous and popular evangelist of the last century, was once asked, “What is character?” Moody answered, “Character is what a man is in the dark.” Now, that is a profound answer. When no one is looking, when no one knows the difference, when all is bare and no one sees but God that is what character is all about. That is the real you.

Once you know your good attributes and your bad attributes, you know your strengths and your weaknesses. Scripture commands you to be a person of good character. Galatians 6:10 says it this way: “So then, while we have opportunity, let us do good to all men.” In a nutshell, this verse tells you that every chance you get to do good that you should take the opportunity and do something good. This boils down to you being a person of character. If you are going to do good in every opportunity you have, then you must be a person who exhibits good character. This includes doing good in broad daylight and in the deep, dark night.

You can see that it really does matter if you are a person of character or not. So take every opportunity to do good, as verse 10 says, which means we must do good and that is what character is all about.

Let’s become people known for your good character, by taking every opportunity to do good and turn it into a matter of helping each and every person you can. The real you really does matter!
