You live in a world that focuses much attention on the material things of this world. You want the fanciest car that you can afford. You want the nicest house that fits into your budget. Then the clothes you wear makes a statement to those you encounter daily. It is hard to get past all those material matters that scream for your attention.
We are subject to our own passions, unless a change in the way we think occurs. One unknown author put it this way: “When we look at what we want and then compare it to what we have, we will be unhappy. When we think of what we deserve, rather than what we have, we will thank God.” That gives a refreshing way of thinking about material goods in your life.
In Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, He discusses material wealth. He tells you, in no uncertain terms, how to view material goods: “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in and steal; for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:19-21; NASV). Your focus on earthly goods needs to change. Instead of focusing on earthly treasures, focus on eternal treasures.
Knowing where your focus needs to be is one thing. Having that focus is another thing. To change that way of thinking requires more than a good desire. In fact, humanly speaking, changing the way you think is impossible.
To have eternal treasures means that Christ has to change your desire(s). A change in thinking requires supernatural power. Ask Christ to give you a passion for eternal rewards. Then you will have true riches!
