Practicing The Basics

To accomplish what God wants you to do in life often requires that you get back to the basics.  I remember hearing about a para-church organization years ago planning for a huge crowd.  They publicized the event.  There were numerous meetings planning the event.  A large conference hall had been reserved.  The night of the event finally arrived.  And no one showed up.  Not even one person attended the event.  The leaders were devastated.  When the leader was questioned about what to do next, his reply was, “We get back to the basics.”

When life takes us off guard, your first impulse may be to throw in the towel.  To say that you give up.  To say, you put so much into that event and it failed, that you will move on to something else.  Discouragement is one of Satan’s primary weapons.  Francis Bacon (1521-1626) said, “There never was once found, in any age of the world, either religion or law that did so highly exalt the public good as the Bible.”  The Holy Bible is a unique book that will cause, those who read it, to live the best possible life on earth.  It will, also, teach you how-to live-in heaven eternally.

Jesus spoke to many who believed He was the Messiah.  In that discourse to them, He said this, “and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32).  Jesus’ words, “you shall know the truth,” need to be taken seriously.  How is your Bible reading recently?  How is your Bible study recently?  How is your living by the Bible going, recently?  Just maybe, it is time to get back to the basics in your Christian journey.  Go back to those disciplines you once endeared.

Stop!  Review your spiritual life for a minute or two.  Are you practicing the Christian basics?  If not, start now!
