Getting Down To Business

When you were a youngster, you had one objective in mind – to have as much fun as possible.  You seized every opportunity that came along to turn it into some playful activity.  You endured work that had to be done, but the objective of the work was to do it so that you could resume your playtime.

As years passed, so did your work ethic.  As you approached adulthood, you realized that life on this earth required a certain amount of work.  That work meant that certain things needed to be done, and they needed to be done well.  If not, you would have to redo them.

The Navigators are a great Christian organization that builds Christians up in their spiritual lives.  Their goal is spiritual maturity for Christians in their organization.  Lorne Sanny of the Navigators said his father told him all his instruction to Lorne could be summarized in four words, “Get with it, son.”  Now, that is some sound advice.  In other words, you do not have all your life to do what God wants you to do; buckle down and get to work in God’s kingdom.

You may be saying that is good advice, but that philosophy does not resonate with you.  You may even view it as worldly wisdom, but definitely not Godly wisdom.  Colossians 3:23 proves otherwise; it says, “Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord, rather than for men.”  This verse is usually interpreted to say that you are to please the Lord instead of men when you do your work.  But look at the way this verse tells you to do your work – “heartily.”  Put your whole self in your work.

To get down to business in the work that you do is the way the Lord wants you to perform your work.  It means, “Get with it, son!”
