When you were a child, you wanted to be married one day. You would play make believe, as you imagined yourself as being the father. You wanted to be a father with children.
You grew up and became a father. Your wife and kiddos look up to you and love you with a love that only your family is capable of doing. You family means the world to you; your life revolves around your wife and kids.
A little boy’s definition: “Father’s Day is just like Mother’s Day, only you don’t spend as much on the present.” Ha! Ha! You chuckle as you read that. The truth is, though, that is exactly the way you, as a father, want it. You do not want any of the attention drawn to you. You just want to be the backbone of the family, sight unseen.
Joseph was Jesus’ earthly father. Joseph knew Mary was pregnant, and did not want to embarrass her. He planned on secretly divorcing her. “But when he considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, ‘Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child which has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit’” (Matthew 1:20). Joseph had the privilege of raising Jesus in his home. Just as Joseph was revealed that Mary’s Child is God incarnate, know that the Lord tells you in the Bible how you are to be a father.
As you celebrate Father’s Day, recommit yourself to the Lord Jesus that you will be a better father to your children. This is your day fathers to kick back in the easy chair; let your children bring your slippers, and let them wait on you. I know! I know! That is not the way you tick. But today is your day, so relax and enjoy it. Let me repeat one more time – Happy Father’s Day!
