Keeping From Being Foolish

As you think back over your life, you can remember several times that you were foolish.  You definitely knew better, but at the time your wise thoughts went out the window.  The result was a very foolish act on your part.  You and I have both done things that afterwards we thought how foolish we were in doing those certain things.

British statesman, W. E. Gladstone (1809-1898), visited Christ Church College and spoke optimistically about the betterment of English society during his lifetime.  His outlook was so positive that a student challenged him, “Sir are there no adverse signs?”  Gladstone reflected, “Yes, there is one thing that frightens me – the fear that God seems to be dying out of the minds of men.”  As God becomes less and less of a topic of your mental facilities, your love and obedience to the Scriptures decreases as well.

A person who does not acknowledge the existence of God, the Holy Bible calls such a person a “fool”. – “The fool has said in his heart, ‘There is no God’” (Psalm 14:1).  When you fail to believe that God exists, you are a fool.

When you say that God does not exist, you act foolishly.  Is there any help for you in that condition?  Yes, in Proverbs 1:7 it says: “Fools despise wisdom and instruction.”  The “wisdom and instruction” talked about here are those that are according to the Word of God.

But exactly how can you keep from being foolish?  Like Proverbs 1:7 says, to avoid being foolish be growing in biblical “wisdom and instruction.”  You fight foolishness in your life by spending time growing in your relationship with the Lord Jesus.

To keep from being foolish then, stay close to the Lord through Bible reading, study, and prayer!
