Reading is required when you are in school. Your textbooks were there to read and to study. To a large degree, the grades you got in the courses you took, depended how well you knew the material in those class texts.
When you get out of school, there is a certain amount of reading to do on your job. Yes, of course you need to stay up on the latest technologies in your occupation by reading. Even if your profession does not require much reading, then you have to do some reading in completing forms and documentation for your job.
In considering which books to read, one of the main emphases is on its relevance in your life. Immanuel Kant (1724 – 1804) says this about the importance of reading and studying the Holy Bible: “The Bible is an inexhaustible fountain of all truths. The existence of the Bible is the greatest blessing which humanity ever experienced.” To state another way, Kant was saying that no matter how long and how hard you study the Bible, you cannot know all its contents from cover to cover.
Jesus talked about the words of the Scriptures. He said that the knowledge of the Word of God is important, but there is something else that is even more important. That something is for humanity to live according to what the Scriptures teach. Jesus’ mother and brothers came to talk to the Lord. He does not talk to them, but instead Scripture says, “But He answered and said to them, ‘My mother and brother are those who hear the word of God and do it’” (Luke 8:21).
So, what is a good book to read? It is nothing more than the Bible. It is meant to be read, but more important to be lived. Put the Bible into your daily living today!
