Putting Your Hand To The Plow

Your life is full of so many activities.  You spend the majority of your day filled with school activities or work commitments.  At the end of the day, you are tired and want a little relaxation time.  After all, if you do not get your rest you cannot perform to your fullest the next day.

Although all this is true, Jesus taught to press on with His work to the end.  There are many Scriptures that command you to use your time wisely.  “John Wesley traveled on horseback the equivalent of ten times around the world’s equator.  He preached as often as fifteen times a week for fifty years.  He authored more publications than any written the English language until the contemporary science fiction writer Isaac Asimov.  He read books while making horseback journeys.  When he was past eighty, he complained that he could not read and work more than fifteen hours a day” (John Haggai).  The world around you screams the message that you need to get your rest.  The fact is that you are capable of doing so much more than the culture tells you that you are able to do.

The Word of God affirms that you are doing a good job in serving Jesus, but goes on and challenges you to do just a little bit more.  In fact, you may even be challenged to do a lot more.  1 Thessalonians 4:1 puts it this way, “Finally then, brethren, we request and exhort you in the Lord Jesus, that as you received from us instruction as to how you ought to walk and please God (just as you actually do walk), that you excel still more.”  Thus, this verse runs cross-grain to what your culture tells you to do.

Jesus, in talking about putting your hand to the plow, commanded believers to not look back, but to plunge straight ahead.  Jesus’ words are amplified in the verse above.  So, let’s get busy excelling still more!
