We like to stay on the upswing of life, where we feel content and everything goes our way. That can happen to most of our daily grind. More often than we would like, though, our days are filled with difficulties. Just about the time our life is full of promises and positive events, life throws us a curve and dark days appear. The dark days do not just only appear, but they can linger days on end.
Theodore Roosevelt addressed this when he wrote: “Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much or suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that know neither victory or defeat.” Yes, life can bring to us days with dark clouds, but the alternative is to live a life without trying to accomplish anything. The fact that we strive to do great things brings with it victory and at times, defeat. As we seek to do mighty things for God, triumphs come and with them some disappointments.
The Scriptures tell us what we are to do in the face of disillusionments and occasional failures. This guidance is given to us in Philippians 3:14, “I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” In other words, never give up. When disappointment and even failure occurs in our lives, we are to respond by pulling up our boot straps and continue serving the Lord.
Weariness and failures will come in our lives. We are human and that is just part of being made of dust. Do not focus on our short comings. Get a laser focus on the rewards you will one day get in heaven, and “press on.” As we “press on” we will dare to accomplish “mighty things, wo win glorious triumphs.” Just ask the Lord Jesus for the strength to “press on”; He will give you the strength you need.
