Light Our Fire

So much of what we do on a daily basis is done half-heartedly.  We do what is required and little more.  Each day is approached only in light of how many more days to the weekend.  When the weekend finally arrives, it is filled with one pleasure after another.  This ho hum existence gives us little actual contentment.

With this attitude, we do not think biblically.  We do not meditate on Scripture throughout our day.  Little thought is given to spiritual things unless we are at church or with the 5 to 10 devotion we do daily.  The result is that we live in empty shells devoid of any divine peace.

The New Testament Christians had a different perspective.  They saw the resurrected Lord Jesus and anticipated His return to happen just any day.  Perhaps even that very day.  This gave them a passion for living, because any day they thought it might be the day they go to heaven.  Martin Luther was a reformer who played a significant role in church history.  In describing the attitude we should have on a daily basis, he said, “Live as though Christ died yesterday, rose this morning, and is coming back tomorrow.”

That mind frame will light a fire for Godly living underneath us.

Jesus’ words to the church of Laodicea are words of truth to us today: “Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline; therefore, be zealous and repent” (Rev. 3:19).  To find contentment in our lives, requires us to first “repent.”  After that, we should go into our daily tasks with us being “zealous” for the Lord.

Today let’s light a fire underneath ourselves by going back to our Christian roots and being “zealous” for the Lord Jesus.  Stop.  Listen attentively.  Do I hear the sound of a trumpet?
