When you were s child you had someone as your hero. That person meant the world to you. You almost worshipped that person. You looked at them and what they did, you soon would follow. As far as you were concerned that person could do no wrong.
Fast forward a decade and those who were your hero as a child have faded in the past. That childhood hero no longer holds your attention. You no longer have a hero. Although you have no hero, you have replaced that hero with someone you highly admire. They are not a hero. But they are someone that in many ways you would like to be like them.
Looking at your Christian life you look up to certain people that emulate Christ in one manner or another. That person has gifts or personality characteristics that make an impression on you. “It’s not great talent whom God blesses so much as likeness of Jesus” (Robert Murray McCheyne). You are at your peak in striving to be the best Christian you can be, when you put forth your best ability to be exactly like Jesus.
You find Jesus washing the disciple’s feet. They are hesitant to let Jesus wash their feet. That task is to be done by a servant, not the teacher. After Jesus washes their feet He tells them some sobering news. “For I give you an example that you also should do as I did for you” (John 13:15; NASV). Jesus tells His disciples to follow Him. He wants His disciples to follow Jesus’ example.
To succeed in life, you must follow the right example(s). Following the right example leads to your success. That includes your spiritual life. Jesus is that right model for you to follow. Live so that Jesus is your example!
