You may be the kind of person to joke around about the reality of hell. You may think, that if there is such a place, that you and your friends will play pool and party forever. After all, that is how you feel a loving God will treat you.
You could be the kind of person who refuses to believe that there is a God. You have heard what Christians have told you about God, the devil, and hell, but you refuse to believe. Walter Hooper, C. S. Lewis’ secretary, chuckled when he read this grace inscription: “Here lies an atheist. All dressed up and no place to go.” When he told C. S. Lewis about this, Lewis didn’t chuckle. He responded, “The atheist probably wishes now that was true.” In other words, Lewis was saying that the atheist was in hell, whether or not he believed in it during his earthly life or not.
The Word of God speaks about hell. In fact, Christ, Himself, taught about hell. He does not beat around the bush, but He makes some pointed statements about hell. In talking about the judgment of the Gentiles, Christ makes the following statement: “Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels’” (Matthew 25:41; NKJV). This says that unbelievers will be cast into “the everlasting fire.” Just so you know that this is a place of extreme anguish and torture, Christ goes on to say in verse 45 of this chapter: “And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life” (NKJV).
Hell is a dreadful, physically painful, place of punishment for those who do not know Christ as Lord and Savior. Ask Christ to forgive you of your sins; accept His death on the cross for your sins. Then enjoy heaven vs. hell!
