There are numerous times in our life when we hear someone say, “Just grow up!” At that point, we know we have not handled a situation well. The hard part of that advice is that it has no age barrier. Those words can be told to us as teenagers, young adults, and among older adults. Face it. We are capable of making dumb mistakes at any age of our life.
The lessons we learn, from those times we did not handle well, are essential in our growing up process. From those lessons, we grow. Each lesson causes more and more growth into the person we should be.
Finally, at some point in our life, we reach a point where we do live a life that is more mature. At that point, we change as people, also. Chuck Swindoll explains this inner transformation well, as he said, “A sign of maturity is when you go from a thick skin and a hard heart to a tough skin and a soft heart.” Inexperience in life situations, causes us to have a thick skin and a hard heart. That is the only way we know how to survive life’s difficulties. With time, and Christ’s gentle touch on our lives, we learn a better way. We learn to have a tough skin and soft heart.
The Word of God commands us to grow in our Christian life and become mature. It teaches us not to stay as baby Christians. “Brethren, do not be children in understanding; however, in malice be babes, but in understanding be mature” (1 Corinthians 14:20; NKJV). In other words, in our understanding of spiritual things, we are to be mature.
Yes, it is time for us to grow up. We are to grow up as Christians. Grow to be mature in our understanding. Studying our Bibles more in 2024 is a great place to begin!
“Grow up”–thanks, Robin, for your thoughts on this. At my age, 87, I feel that I have lived through all of these stages. But I still must live out the time that God gives me, which means that I can try to mature even more. I do recognize this maturity now, more than ever. I hope that I can keep maturing until my last day! Amen and amen!
Hello Barbara,
I am glad you found the blog helpful. Yes, 1 Thessalonians 4:1 exhorts us to “excel even more” in our obedience to the Scriptures. You do that not on your own efforts but by the power of the Holy Spirit. Draw near to Christ and He will draw near to you. Thanks for letting me know you found the blog useful!
In His Service,
Robin
