You work hard and make all the money you can, so you can live a fulfilled life. With the money you make you pay for the necessities of life and spend some on the finer things life may bring your way. It is the money spent on those extra things that bring you enjoyment.
You enjoy yourself with that extra cash you have with each paycheck. If you are like most, you strive to have more money to spend on your recreational activities. No matter how much you spend on those things that bring enjoyment into your life, you always want some more.
That vicious circle of spending what you can afford to have fun, and wanting more money, seems to be endless. There just never is never enough money. Thus, you always want something better than you have. An anonymous writer once wisely said, “If we can’t have the best, we can make the best of what we have.” Wise counsel. Instead of always wanting more or something better, you will find contentment in just enjoying what you have.
Scripture affirms that thought. Tucked away in one of the Pauline letters, Paul addresses that issue. He says in Philippians 4:11 (NKJV), “Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content.” Notice that he is not talking about have some extra food, clothing, or something extra in his life. He is talking about those things in his life that are a “need.” Those essential things you must have in this life. Those needs, he says, he can do without, in any and all situations, he may find himself.
Finding fulfillment is easy. Just learn to be content with whatever you have. Agree with Paul that to be content with what you have, you need to “learn” how to do that. So, go forth and be content with just what you have.
