You feel so inadequate to pray. You avoid praying in public at all costs. Even in your private life, prayer to Christ seems so foreign. It is something that does not come easy for you to do.
Often you pray for those things that are spiritual but matters you are capable of doing you handle those yourself. If it helps, there is no such thing as dividing your life into spiritual matters, worldly matters, personal matters, etc. When you divide your life into those categories, you limit the area(s) that you offer prayers for.
As you realize that all of life comes underneath the umbrella of prayer, how then are you to pray? Phillips Brooks sheds some wise counsel on this: “Do not pray for easy lives. Pray to be a stronger person. Do not pray for tasks equal to your powers, but pray for powers equal to your tasks.” Putting that together in your prayer life, could possibly, dramatically change the way you pray.
The Holy Bible, in talking about things to be thankful for, gives some clear instruction: “for it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer” (1 Timothy 4:5, NKJV). Notice, that prayer is associated with God’s Word. Have you ever thought about including the Scriptures in your prayer life? That addition, may just enhance your prayers.
Knowing how to pray is important. But do not get too hung up on praying this way, or that way. The very best way for you to pray is to talk to Christ just like you would to a loving father or mother or good friend.
So, how should you pray? Pray to the Father as you would a dear friend, because He is the dearest friend you will ever have. Let him know what is on your heart, for He already knows but wants your fellowship. Start today!
