Funny thing about people that cross your path: you probably do not remember much about them, but you definitely remember how they treated you. If that person was mean, quick tempered, vulgar, negative, or had other negative traits, you remember that is the way they treated you in like manner. If that person was loving, kind, affirmative, positive, or other positive traits, you remember that about the way they treated you, also.
You learn at a young age, that the words others tell you has a profound impart on your relationship with them, and how you feel about that person. Bob Orben recalls an incident about being careful what you say to others: “I stopped criticizing my wife’s cooking after her very first meal. I said, ‘How come you don’t make the same kind of pie filling my mother used to make?’ And she said, ‘How come you don’t make the same kind of dough my father used to make?’” Ha! Ha! It is humorous, but it makes a good point. You need to be careful what words you speak.
For Christians, the Holy Bible teaches much about the words believers are to speak. Positive words that refresh and uplift others are stressed within its cover. With regards to speech between believers, Scripture has a command you are to follow: “Therefore encourage one another and build up one another, just as you also are doing” (1 Thessalonians 5:11). Yep, we in the body of Christ are to be someone who encourages those around us. You are to “build up one another” and not put them down.
Words of gold are much sought after. You are to dispense words of gold everywhere you. How do you do that? By being that person that is an encourager with words that build up those around you.
