We live in a world that teaches us to be self-sufficient. If the job is to get done, then it is up to us to do it. It is taught at a young age, that what you do is up to you to get it done. This philosophy follows us through our schooling and into the working world. It also overflows into our personal relationships. Whenever anything needs to be done, then we must do it.
All this work, that depends on us, isolates us and keeps us from fostering relationships. After all, when we seek help, it allows for a deeper relationship with others to develop. William Arthur Ward has some wise words to share with us: “If you would be interesting, be interested; if you would be pleased, be pleasing; if you would be loved, be lovable; if you would be helped, be helpful.” Notice the end of his statement. In order for us to have others help us, then we need to help others.
Sometimes you recognize that before you can help others, you, yourself, need help. God knows that we are but dust. He knows full well our needs that go beyond our ability to accomplish them on our own. Therefore, He gives us some wise words in Psalm 46:1, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” God is the One in whom we can find the strength we need at the exact time we need it. Also, He delivers this exact help we need, at the exact time we need it.
There are a lot of things we can do on our own, but we realize that some things are beyond our control. Sometimes we need to offer up a simple prayer to God, “Lord I need a little help, please!” Our much-needed help often times is just a prayer away. Right now may just be the time you need most to utter that prayer. Then, help is immediately on its way!
