We hear a tune or have a tune in our head and what do we do? We get that foot to tapping. Music is loved by everyone from the toddler to the aged senior citizen. It is a universal language. It speaks to the poor pauper as loudly as it does to the multi-millionaire. No matter what country you live in, nor your background, nor your nationality, music has a way of reaching down deep into our soul. The result is the foot gets tapping and the soul lifts its spirit.
Martin Luther was the Reformer who set Christendom free from the shackles of traditionalism of the Roman Catholic Church to a salvation in Christ by faith alone. Luther was also quite the scholar. As he related the place of music within the church and the church member, he said it this way, “Next to the Word of God music deserves the highest praise. The gift of language combined with the gift of song was given to man that he should proclaim the Word of God through music.” Music can lift your spirits, but more especially Christian music. Often times the believer’s faith expressed through music ministers to the man/woman of faith like nothing else can.
David was, among so many other things, a musician. He saw how music could relieve the depressed, as he witnessed that very thing happen when he played the harp for King Saul. Later, he became king and was instrumental in orchestrating the worship of God in Israel. “The priests stood at their posts, and the Levites also, with the instruments of music to the Lord, which King David had made for giving praise to the Lord” (2 Chron. 7:6). Make no mistake about it, music allows us people of faith to worship the Lord in a much higher way than words alone.
Listen to some music and let that foot tap for the Lord Jesus. Stop! I have to turn that music volume up!
