Overcoming The Blues

Has life gotten you down?  Does it seem like life has lost its zest?  Are you running on the treadmill of life without any enjoyment?

God never intended for you to live that way.  He wants you to enjoy your pilgrimage while on earth.  Yes, life is meant to be enjoyed.  There are many tasks in life that you do not enjoy, but you do not have to stay there.  Low places in your life will occur, just do not let them be the modus operandi of your daily routine.

In talking about how to be happy day-in and day-out, William Arthur Ward has this to say, “Real happiness is more of a habit than a goal, more of an attitude than an attainment.  It is the companion of cheerfulness, not the creature of circumstances.  Happiness is what overtakes us when we forget ourselves, when we learn to open our eyes in optimism and close the door in the face of defeat.  We win happiness when we lose ourselves in service to others.”  Ward nails happiness on the head.  You are happy when you forget about making yourself happy, and focus on making someone else happy.

The Bible takes that belief, and moves it from a physical realm to a spiritual realm.  Job 5:17 states, “Behold, how happy is the man whom God approves.”  To be truly happy on earth requires you to be the best Christian you can be.  As you live obediently by the Scriptures, God fills you with his joy and happiness.

This world definitely has its ups and downs, but you do not have to live everyday of your life in the trenches.  You can live above your circumstances.  Earthly wisdom tells you that the way to be happy is to make someone else happy; this takes your mind off yourself and puts it on others.  Godly wisdom tells you the way to be happy is to be growing in your relationship with the Lord Jesus.  To overcome the blues, live your life by incorporating both the earthly wisdom and the Godly wisdom; you are to serve other and live biblically!
