After you have been a Christian for a while, the newness of the gospel wears off. What was once new and exciting, now becomes mundane and uninteresting. The joy of reading your Bible is gone. Along with the familiarity of the Bible comes decreased time spent in God’s Word and often loss of interest in being in church with God’s people.
Why does this happen? For much of the time, these things happen because you have forsaken the study of God’s Word. You know that the Holy Bible is God’s love letter to Christians, but you have forsaken the daily reading of it. Donald G. Barnhouse was a scholar of the last century, and in regards to the study of the Scriptures, he said this: “If I had only three remaining years of ministry, I would spend two of them studying.” The late Billy Graham when asked what he would do differently if he could change anything about his ministry, said that he would spend less time speaking and more time studying. Wow! You are wise if you take the counsel of these two pillars of faith and study your Bible more.
Of course, when you think of studying the Scriptures the first verse that comes to mind is 1 Timothy 2:15. Although this is true, let’s turn your attention to another verse; it is John 8:32, “and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” These are Jesus’ words to those who had believed in Him. The “truth” of course is the Bible. To “know” the Bible means that you have to be a student of the Bible. The result of your study of the Scriptures is that it “will set you free.” Free from the disappointments that this earthly life naturally brings, along with, freedom from eternity in hell.
