You probably really like the pastor/preacher at the church you attend. Why do you like him? Does he make you feel good? Does he make you forget about your troubles? Does he offer positive comments to help you overcome obstacles in your life? The reason you go to church and your motive for listening to any preacher tells a lot about your walk with the Lord Jesus and the level of your maturity.
Charles Spurgeon was one of the greatest preachers to ever walk planet earth. When he preached, the Holy Spirit moved and scores of unbelievers accepted Christ every time he preached. Today, modern-day preachers still study his sermons to help them improve their own. “How did you like Mr. Spurgeon?” someone asked a friend who had just returned from hearing the famous preacher. The reply was, “I forgot to investigate Mr. Spurgeon; my attention was drawn so closely to the Savior of whom he was preaching.” Any preacher who is a true herald of spiritual truth should focus on getting himself out of the way and pointing those listening to his voice to the Lord Jesus.
I hear what you are saying. “That is your opinion but I have a different opinion.” Let’s see what the Scriptures say about this matter. Probably, there is no one servant of Christ, who was a preacher, that is better qualified to speak about this than Paul, himself. “For we do not preach ourselves but Christ Jesus as Lord, and ourselves as your bond-servants for Christ’s sake” (2 Cor. 4:5). Any preacher who focuses attention to him is not a true minister of the gospel. A preacher is only the voice; the focus must always be on the giver of all good things, Jesus Christ.
Maybe it is time to take a close look at those you receive biblical instruction from. Do they pass the test? If not, then change churches, as hard as that may be. If yes, verbally tell your pastor how much you appreciate him pointing you to Jesus. Jesus must be your first, last, and everything in between for life until we meet Him face to face.
