There was a time in everyone’s life when someone showed them a little kindness at just the right time of need, and it was remembered forever. That kind word, or gentle touch, or hug brought feeling of care and concern that was desperately needed. Kind people are rare, but how necessary in the family of God.
One Bible scholar and pastor of yesteryear that truly knew the importance of kindness was John Wesley. He was used greatly in God’s kingdom work. Maybe, just maybe, one of the reasons he was used so mightily was because he not only knew what Christian kindness was all about, but he also practiced it. In his words, this is what he had to say about kindness, “Do all the good you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can.” Wow! Just think what a wonderful place this earth would be if more people lived that way.
The Holy Scriptures are not silent when it comes to encouraging and even commanding Christians to show kindness. When Paul was talking to the Colossians about the characteristics of the new believer in Christ, he commands them to, “And so, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience” (Col. 3:12). Those are some great attributes to live by. Notice, near the beginning of the list is “kindness.”
Then when you look at the Lord Jesus Christ, who is our model to follow, you can’t help but see how He was kind to everyone He met. Since we are to emulate Him, we should show kindness, as well.
So follow the Lord’s example and go out into your world and spread a little kindness around. Start today!
