Craftsman Versus Carpenter

Some things in life just can’t be rushed.  To save time and expedite the results often compromises the quality of the product.  A musician can’t cut corners on the practice time without it affecting the quality of the music.  The chef can’t compromise the preparation and cooking time of a delicious feast without affecting the quality of the meal.  A doctor can’t compromise the diagnosis of a patient without it affecting the quality of medical care the patient gets.  In almost every area of life, when proper care is not given to details so often the quality suffers.

There is huge difference between a wood craftsman and a carpenter.  The first creates works of art in wood and the other just does the basics to get the job done.  An elderly gentleman worked as a wood craftsman with diligence and great precision.  He explained why he spent so much time on each project.  “I learned long ago that speed should always be secondary to quality workmanship.  Years from now when I am gone and people inspect what I am building today, no one will ask, “How long did this project take him?”  Instead, they’ll ask, “Who made this?”  The answer will either be a craftsman or a carpenter.  Quality and excellence does matter.

The Holy Bible talks about this as well in Phil. 4:8, “Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and anything worthy of praise, let your mind dwell on these things.”  In other words, quality and excellence in your thoughts and actions really does matter.

Let’s step up our game some and improve on the quality and excellence we do in everything in life.  Let’s start today!
